Plankton Net in Action

During expeditions, the Oceanography team uses a plankton net to collect samples to bring back to the lab. The net is secured to the boat’s boom, which can be released down to tow the net in the water. The copepods and other plankton the white, “cod end” jar at the bottom of the net. After a while, students pull the boom back up to take the net out of the water. They pour the sample into the collection jar to take back to the lab, and use DI water to rinse out as many organisms as possible.
